To Plant a Garden is to Believe in Tomorrow: A Case Study of a Chicago Community-Based Organization Focused on Health Education Through School Gardens

Summary

This study employed a collective case study design to evaluate Gardeneers, a Chicago-based nonprofit implementing school-based garden programs. The methods included participant observation, interviews, and field note analysis. The researcher observed garden sessions either as a neutral observer or as a participant observer, depending on the garden educator’s preference. Field notes and photos were collected during observations, with reflective summaries recorded after each session. Interviews were conducted with garden educators using a framework focused on program implementation, curriculum use, staff development, perceived student outcomes, and implementation challenges. Informal conversations with students were also recorded as field notes. Results showed variation in stakeholder engagement and sustainability challenges across schools, with funding being a common issue. The study found that Gardeneers’ adaptability was a key strength, allowing the program to meet specific school and student needs. Based on these findings, Gardeneers refined their program model and identified areas for improvement.
